Materials Guide: Loft Nets, Floor Nets & Dock Nets

We’ve created this page to help you understand the materials we offer, explain which variables matter most, and guide you toward the best possible net for your project. Whether you need loft nets for an indoor space, floor nets for a suspended lounge, architectural netting to enhance a modern design, or dock nets for the ultimate relaxation space over the water, our goal is to empower you to make an informed decision—and get a net you’ll love.

Key Netting Material Variables to Consider

UV Protection & Resistance

  • The most common cause of net failure is due to UV damage, the sun can take an incredible toll on materials when outdoors, particularly in the tropics.
  • For nets to last more than a few years in the tropics you should ensure your net has a high quality vinyl UV Resistant coating or similar. Our proprietary UV coating ensures long-lasting durability for polyester and webbing nets.

Elasticity & Comfort

  • A more elastic net “gives” underfoot, which can make it extra comfortable for lounging. These generally take a little more effort to tension out properly although our installation page will help guide you through that.
  • Less elastic nets can be tensioned more tightly, offering a firmer walking surface.

Net Perimeter Styles

  • Purpose of the Netting Perimeter The netting perimeter creates a finished look and forms the structure that the net is tensioned to the edge of your frame with lacing line. A well-made perimeter drastically enhances net safety, durability, & stability.
  • Reinforced Grommet Perimeter Provides a formal, finished look with reinforced edges that reduce scalloping.
  • DyneemaCore Perimeter (rope border) Extends the open feel to the edge. Lacing is done directly around this structural net perimeter. Our proprietary DyneemaCore Perimeter offers substantially improved safety, durability, & stability due to our proprietary design & UV coating process.

Price & Performance

  • All projects have a budget, netting price will vary widely based on the netting material selected, perimeter style, & complexity of design.
  • We prioritize creating value by creating high-quality, durable nets so our pricing will typically be higher for a given net than products that attempt to compete with us.
  • Consider the value you get with a high quality product that will last much longer, look much better, require less upkeep, and be much safer.

Openness & Comfort

  • Wider openings increase transparency and airflow—ideal for loft or floor applications where you want a true “floating” experience. Put a towel over more open nets for improved comfort.
  • Smaller openings provide a more comfortable feel due to increased surface area.
  • Choose the openness that is the best compromise for your project considering comfort & transparency.

Color

  • The color of the net strongly impacts ease of maintenance & transparency (ease of seeing through the net). To a lesser extent it can have an effect on temperature on certain thicker nets.
  • Choose dark colors for easier maintenance as well as notable improved transparency.
  • If the net is thick/heavy dark nets can get on the warm side due to their higher thermal mass. Open nets technically get warmer but due to their high surface area to thermal mass ratio they are completely comfortable even in the sun.

This before & after photo of a catamaran on which we replaced poor quality, light colored nets with our Ultra-Pro nets in black is a great example of how transparency improves with dark colored nets. Even this large opening netting has its transparency drastically improved when it is in a dark color.
